New Testament Class Lesson 3:Jesus The Son of God
- In the first class we discussed 2 Timothy 3:16, 17. This verse mentions that “All scripture is God-breathed…” This is an important verse because it gives authority to God for the writing of scripture. However, if you were to use this verse to an atheist who does not consider the Bible to be more than a book; is it a useful scripture to show the Bible is from God? Why or why not? Do you know some names of secular writers that mention Jesus? Is what the writer stated consistent to what the Bible states? Why would this be an important detail?
- The Bible has many scriptures that prophesy the coming of Jesus. Why are these statements important to our belief in Jesus? Read Luke 4:16-21. Why is this a significant moment in the life of Christ?
- Read Luke 24:27, 44-45. What gift did he give his apostles during this event? Read the rest of the chapter. How did the apostles respond after receiving this gift? We are not given the same gifts directly from Jesus, but we do have something the apostles did not have. What do we have that they did not? What should our reaction be?
- Read Matt 5:17, John 5:39-40, and John 5:46-47. Each verse is connected, how? To whom was Jesus talking? What is the significance of his statements here and understanding who he was talking to?
- Jesus fulfilled every prophecy that was written about him (60 major and 270 details of each prophecy). Why is that statement significant? In addition, What would have happened if he and left one unfulfilled or one detail unfulfilled? Find 8 prophecies Jesus fulfilled that he could have had no control over. For example, he had no control over where he was born (Mic. 5:2) but he had control over riding into town on a colt (Zec. 9:9).
- Was Jesus God? Or was Jesus a god? Read John 1:1-4, 14, John 17:3-5, Gen. 1:26.
- Who did the associates of Jesus believe he was? John 4:39-42, Matt 16:13-17 Why would these accounts be important?
- Who did Jesus say he was? John10:24-33, John 5:17-18 John 8:58-59 Mark 14:61-64 What is evident in these verses? Look again at the verse from Mark. What was the context of these verses? Is this a significant idea?
- What did Jesus do that showed proof of his claim? Why is this proof an important detail?
- Read Acts 2:23-32. Does this statement show proof of Jesus' claim to be God?
- If Jesus was just a good wise man, and a moral teacher and not the son of God, what would be unique about his claims? What are the two alternatives about Jesus' identity?
